A Twist of Teen 1 “Happiness”

Happiness
By Ranbir Singh Dhatt

What is happiness? The definition can vary from person to person. For one, it could be relative to the well-being of their family, a selfless individual who wants nothing but the best for their loved ones. For another, it could be relative to money. To desire more and more to fulfil their dreams. But, happiness, especially to people at a young age, can have an even wider definition. Happiness, under an umbrella term, so to say, is subjective to individuals. Happiness is one of those few words which has a separate meaning for each person across the globe. After all, happiness isn’t an emotion that can be pertained to a singular event for the simple reason that not everybody in this world has access to the same opportunities and lifestyle. The definition of happiness will vary immensely from person to person, based on a multitude of factors. But, let’s look at it from a young mind’s perspective.

What could happiness mean to a teenager?

Happiness for a teenager is to be socially accepted, to be painted in a good light, showcasing all their assets to the max, to be loved and accepted by all. The want to be accepted is one of humanity’s most basic values, the need to be good for everybody. We have to keep in mind the factor that a teenager is blooming into a whole new individual and is going through changes that basically everyone has gone through before. Trust me, puberty does not help with social anxiety. I mean, come on. Really, acne? Being a teenager is hard, really hard. Living in an orthodox community where most adults only begin to see the value of an individual when they are, indeed, adults, the pressure to succeed to be accepted even in your future just adds on to the overall want. But, in my opinion? Happiness for a teenager is to be content with how they are. Is to have that option, to be able to look in a mirror and smile, to have that self realisation, that yeah, I’m gonna have a good day today. Happiness is to be confident and loving of yourself, regardless of what anyone else believes. And while that does sound daunting, it’s nowhere near impossible. Self love is probably one of the best things you can do to yourself. Knowing your limits and just how much to push yourself is paramount to success. Knowing what you like and don’t like, and accepting yourself for that bias, are all stepping stones to happiness. And with that self confidence, people are gonna be grovelling at your feet in an instant. Happiness is, in a way, success. And everybody can achieve whatever they want, by loving yourself, pushing yourself as much as you want to be pushed, and succeeding to the point of your pleasure. I mean, doing it all alone? What else could a teenager possibly want?
